"There was a thought of vacating the belts": Usyk made a frank confession about his career
Unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (20-0, 13 KOs) considered relinquishing his belts after Russia launched a full-scale invasion on February 24 last year. The holder of three division titles could not even think about boxing at the moment when our country faced military aggression of the neighboring state.
Usyk told about it in an interview for the documentary "Usyk - Joshua. The Art of Boxing" for YouTube-channel Usyk17. Our boxer noted that his decision not to suspend his career was influenced by conversations with wounded soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
"On February 25 at 5:30 in the morning I was at home. Helicopters were flying, people were leaving Kyiv. What was I thinking about? I immediately called my military friends and asked which military enlistment center to go to. I had no thoughts about boxing. I even thought of releasing the belts so that the guys could box for them. And when everything would be over, to come and say that we have such a situation.... But when I talked to the military in the hospital, they asked me why I do not train and prepare for a rematch with Joshua," said Usyk.
