The IIHF is going to unprecedentedly punish Russia for disregarding international rules

Ivan Fedotov has been announced to the KHL

The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) will punish the Kontinental Hockey League, the Moscow-based CSKA hockey club and the Russian Hockey Federation if goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov plays for the Russian army. On 23 August, it became known that CSKA decided not to obey the IIHF's decision to disqualify the Russian national team goalkeeper, disregarding international rules.

According to R-Sport, if Fedotov participates in KHL matches during the suspension period, the IIHF may deprive CSKA of the points gained in the championship and impose a fine of 150,000 Swiss francs for each match for which the hockey player is announced during this period.

The IIHF can also impose individual sanctions on the heads of the KHL and the RHF.

The IIHF will also ban all KHL clubs from making international transfers. Another penalty could be an additional suspension for a longer period of time.

It is worth noting that Fedotov was suspended for signing a contract with CSKA Moscow while having an existing agreement with Philadelphia, with whom the Russian national team goaltender agreed to transfer in May 2022. The following month, the hockey player was detained and forcibly conscripted into the Russian army.

It is believed that the athlete was specially sent to the Russian Armed Forces to prevent him from joining an NHL club. At the same time, CSKA Moscow entered into a parallel agreement with Ivan.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, two-time Olympic champion Vyacheslav Fetisov threw a real tantrum over the disqualification of Ivan Fedotov, calling for the IIHF's decision to be "shoved in one place". And coach Gennady Kurdin complained that the IIHF does not consider Russians to be human beings. For his part, Alexander Kozhevnikov said that Russia would "start to fold" if it left the IIHF.
