Svitolina plays Świątek

For the second time in her career, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina has reached the semi-finals of the British Open - Wimbledon. In a dramatic match, the 28-year-old from Odesa defeated world number one Iza Świątek from Poland 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.

The tennis players gave the audience a real three-hour spectacle. In the first game, Szwiętek controlled the first half of the match and in the eighth game was on the verge of a triple set point. However, at that moment, Svitolina completely turned the game around, made a comeback and won the set.

During the break, the organisers decided to close the roof over the court, which led to a pause that allowed the Poles to recover a little. The second game began with a terrible mistake by Svitolina - our player failed to transfer the ball to her opponent's side in the simplest of situations and gave the game to Świątek.

Iga managed to take a 3-1 lead, but then the Ukrainian won three games in a row. As a result, the rivals reached the tiebreaker, where the world number one won.

At the start of the third set, Elina managed to break and then another and took a 4-1 lead. The situation of the Polish tennis player became catastrophic when Svitolina made two winners in a row in the sixth game, destroying her opponent. As a result, our compatriot brought the match to victory.

During the match, the Ukrainian made five aces, converted six out of nine break points and won 25 active games. Elina recorded nine double faults and 25 unforced errors.

Elina's rival in the battle for a ticket to the final of the tournament will be the 42nd ranked Czech player, Markéta Vondroušová. Svitolina has met her five times and won three times. The last time the girls played was at the 2020 Olympic Games, when the Odesa player lost in the semi-finals.

Prior to the match, the organisers of Wimbledon 2023 responded to Svitolina's call to inform the audience that Ukrainians would not shake hands with representatives of Russia and Belarus. After winning the 1/8 finals, the Ukrainian did not shake hands with Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who later expressed outrage that the media focused on the behaviour of fans.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, a well-known Russian figure skating coach Tatyana Tarasova said that Elina Svitolina deliberately makes anti-Russian statements out of fear of her compatriots. And fans from the Russian Federation were furious over the Ukrainian tennis player's success at Wimbledon 2023.
