Russia provoked a scandal in world hockey and paid the price
Russian national ice hockey team goalkeeper Ivan Fedotov has been suspended from all competitions for breaching the terms of his contract with the National Hockey League (NHL) club Philadelphia Flyers. The 2022 Olympic Games vice-champion, who has been the subject of a global scandal, signed an agreement with CSKA Moscow and refused to join the North American team, which led to the sanctions.
This is stated in a statement on the official website of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF). Last summer, Fedotov was forcibly drafted into the Russian army to prevent him from joining Philadelphia. Despite the agreement with the NHL club, CSKA signed a parallel contract with Ivan.
The IIHF found the Russians guilty of breaching their contractual obligations. Fedotov was suspended from national and international competitions for four months, from 1 September to 31 December. In addition, CSKA is banned from making any transfers until 10 August next year.
It is worth noting that Fedotov described his service in the Russian army with the words "either you get out or you drown".
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Roman Rotenberg, vice president of the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (RIHF), expressed confidence that "everything has collapsed" in world sport without the aggressor country.
