The propagandist Russian TV channel Match TV, which broadcasts the 2023 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship, will no longer show matches of the Latvian national team. The Baltic team's matches were removed from the broadcast schedule due to the support of Ukraine by the team's fans.

During the match against the tournament favourite, Canada (0:6), Latvian fans hung a huge banner with the Ukrainian flag and the words "Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the heroes!".

The previously scheduled broadcasts of Latvia's games have been removed from the network, as well as replays of the 2023 World Cup matches that have already taken place. The group stage will last until May 23, after which the play-offs will begin.

"The Russian military sports channel Match TV has stopped broadcasting the games of the Latvian national team at the World Ice Hockey Championship. The previously announced broadcasts have been excluded from the network, as well as the replays of the previous ones. The reason is the freeze-frame of the match with Canada, which they managed to show," the Ukrainian Ice Hockey Federation said.

Initially, the 2023 World Championship was to be hosted by St Petersburg, Russia. However, in February 2022, the International Ice Hockey Federation indefinitely suspended the membership of Russia and Belarus in the IIHF due to the war in Ukraine.

On May 27, 2022, it was officially announced that Finland and Latvia would host the tournament instead of the terrorist country. The Russian national ice hockey team has also been suspended from all IIHF international tournaments, including the World Championship.

Earlier, OBOZREVATEL reported that the Russian national hockey team disgraced itself in Kazakhstan by losing to Belarus.

And the coach of the Russian national team became a laughingstock online after saying "I won the fight against three Germans, like in 1945". The coach of Russia 25, Roman Rotenberg, tried to justify himself after another defeat to Belarus as part of the so-called tour.

The Russian coach complained about the refereeing and mentioned Russia's victory at the 2018 Olympics, comparing it to the surrender of Nazi Germany, for which he was called inadequate.
