Svitolina speaks out about Russian attacks at Wimbledon

Ukraine's top tennis player Elina Svitolina burst into tears after defeating China's Wang Xinyu (6-2, 6-1) in the round of 16 of the 2024 Wimbledon tennis tournament. On the eve of the match, the terrorist country Russia carried out a massive shelling of Kyiv, Kryvyi Rih, Dnipro, Pokrovsk, and Kramatorsk, killing at least 34 people. One of the missiles hit the Okhmatdyt children's hospital in the capital.

Stunned by the news, Svitolina went to a Grand Slam grass court match in her traditional white uniform but with a black ribbon of mourning. After the victory, she tried to hide her emotions.

"Of course, it was a great performance on my part. But today is a very difficult day for all people in Ukraine," Elina began her post-match interview and could not hold back her tears. The audience in the stands supported her with prolonged applause.

"So today it was not easy to focus on the match. It was hard to read the news in the morning, so it was incredibly difficult to just be on the court. And I'm glad I played like that and won," Svitolina managed to finish her speech.

Seeing the state of the Ukrainian, for whom her husband, French tennis player Gaël Monfils, was cheering on the arena, the interviewer did not ask Elina any additional questions and let her rest.

It should be noted that the 29-year-old native of Odesa needed 55 minutes to win the match. During this time, Svitolina made eight aces, converted four out of six breakpoints and won 21 active games. Elina scored 62 points in the match against her opponent's 35.

Elina's next opponent will be the Russian representative of Kazakhstan, Elena Rybakina, to whom our compatriot has recently lost at Roland Garros.
