Our compatriot played a brilliant match

Famous Ukrainian tennis player Lyudmyla Kichenok became the Wimbledon 2023 mixed doubles champion. Together with her partner Mate Pavic from Croatia, the 31-year-old Dnipro native defeated the duo of Joran Fliegen (Belgium) / Xu Yifan (China) 6-4, 5-7 (9-11), 6-3.

It is worth noting that this is the first time in the history of our country that a Ukrainian woman has won the Wimbledon adult mixed doubles final. The last time Ukraine won a Grand Slam title was 15 years ago, when Kateryna and Olena Bondarenko defeated Azarenka/Peyer in the final of the 2008 Australian Open.

The key in the first set of the final in London was the 7th game, where the Ukrainian-Croatian pair broke. The second game was an evenly contested affair that ended in a tiebreak. Lyudmyla and Pavic had a match ball, but they were unable to convert it.

It all came down to the third set, where at 4-3, our compatriot and her partner broke.

It will be recalled that in the semi-finals, Kichenok and Pavic defeated the British duo Johnny O'Mara/Olivia Nichols 7-6, 4-6, 6-3.

In the quarter-finals, the Ukrainian-Croatian duo, seeded seventh in the tournament, were stronger than the pair of Nicolas Mayu from France and Anna Danilina from Kazakhstan - 6-3, 6-4. It took Kichenok and Pavic 70 minutes to win.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, in the semifinals of the Wimbledon women's singles, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina lost to Czech Marketa Vondroušová.
