For the first time in history. Ukrainian tennis player sets a unique record at Wimbledon
Ukraine's second seed Marta Kostiuk (WTA No. 36) has reached the third round of Wimbledon, becoming the youngest Ukrainian tennis player in history to reach the third round at a Grand Slam. The 21-year-old from Kyiv improved Elina Svitolina's achievement by one year.
Kostiuk played in the third round of Grand Slam for the first time back in 2018, when she made a splash at the Australian Open at the age of 15.
The third round for Kostiuk:
- Australian Open-2018 at the age of 15;
- US Open-2020 at the age of 18;
- Roland Garros-2021 at the age of 18;
- Wimbledon-2023 at the age of 21.
For comparison, Kateryna Bondarenko achieved this feat at the age of 24, Alyona Bondarenko at 25, and Lesia Tsurenko at 28.
It should be noted that in her career, Marta Kostiuk has made it to the fourth round at the Tennis Championships only once. It happened two years ago at Roland Garros.
At Wimbledon, the next opponent of the Kyiv player will be the US representative Madison Keys (WTA No. 18). The meeting will take place on Saturday, 8 July.
As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, the day before, Lesia Tsurenko made it to the 1/8 finals of the British Open for the first time in her career. Our compatriot defeated Ana Bogdan from Romania in a more than 3.5-hour thriller.
This meeting went down in the history of world tennis. The rivals played the longest tiebreaker in the history of Grand Slam tournaments in the women's singles.
After the victory, Lesia collapsed on the lawn, but then found the strength to approach her opponent to thank her for the game.
