Ex-coach of the Ukrainian national soccer team diagnosed with cancer
The former head coach of the Ukrainian national soccer team Mykhailo Fomenko has serious health problems. According to SportNews, the 74-year-old specialist has cancer.
Before the interview, the media called Fomenko to find out if he suffered from the war (Fomenko was born in the village of Mala Rybytsia, Sumy region), as well as to comment on the results of the Ukrainian national team in qualifying for Euro 2024. The coach refused to talk.
"I can't talk, I have cancer, I'm being treated", Fomenko said.
Mykhailo worked with the national team from 2012 to 2016. Under the guidance of the coach the team played 37 matches, gaining 24 wins and suffering 7 defeats. Fomenko led the "yellow-blue" to the European Championship. Our players have lost all three matches and did not get out of the group. In the final game the Ukrainians lost to Poles - 0-1.
Fomenko was also head coach at Dynamo Kyiv (1992-1993), Veres (1994), Guinea national team (1994), CSKA-Borysfen Kyiv (1994-1996), Metalist (1996-2000, 2001-2002, 2003), CSKA Kyiv (2000-2001), Metallurg from Zaporizhzhia (2003) and Tavria (2006-2008). With him coaching for "Dynamo" Kyiv, the team won the championship and Ukrainian Cup (1993).
After Euro 2016, the players of the "yellow-blue" returned to Kyiv, but at the airport "Boryspil" they were met only by journalists. Fans ignored the arrival of the team.
It should be noted that fans severely criticized the team in social networks. Especially the team's mentor Mykhailo Fomenko, which some hotheads called a "Kremlin agent".
