The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) has admitted Russians to international competitions. The FIG Executive Committee, which took place on July 19, decided to allow athletes from the Russian Federation to compete in a neutral status.
One of the conditions for participation is the absence of any connection with the national federations or national Olympic committees of the Russian Federation or Belarus.
"The admission of athletes will be accompanied by a number of measures described in the Special Rules aimed at ensuring strict compliance with the requirements of neutrality. These accompanying documents, will be published in the coming weeks," the FIG said on its website .
An Athlete wishing to obtain the status of "Individual Neutral Athlete" will have to apply to the FIG in accordance with special rules. If the status is approved, the athlete will be able to compete in competitions under the auspices of the FIG from January 1, 2024.
FIG specifies that the final decision on whether Russian and Belarusian athletes will be eligible to participate in the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024 will be made by the IOC.
"By allowing Russian and Belarusian gymnasts to compete as independent neutral athletes, FIG is ensuring that the rights of all athletes are respected and sending a message to the world that gymnastics is committed to peace," said FIG President Morinari Watanabe.
