Tsurenko defeats Bogdan

Ukrainian Lesia Tsurenko received an incredibly warm reaction from the audience after the Wimbledon 2023 British Open tennis match. The 34-year-old from Kyiv received a standing ovation after defeating Ana Bogdan from Romania in the third round of the Grand Slam tournament.

The rivals spent 3 hours and 40 minutes on the court. Having won a set each, the tennis players brought the third game to a tiebreaker. The athletes turned the decisive segment into a real thriller, in which they needed as many as 38 games to determine the winner.

In the end, Tsurenko won 20-18 after a mistake by Bogdan, who made a bad shot at the decisive moment and sent the ball out. The exhausted Ukrainian collapsed on the lawn, and then found the strength to approach her opponent to thank her for the game.

The audience appreciated the tennis played by Ana and Lesia, starting to applaud them loudly, and then stood up and gave the winner a standing ovation.

The winner of the Jessica Pegula (USA) - Elisabetta Cocciaretto (Italy) match will compete for a ticket to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon 2023. The American, who is seeded fourth in the tournament, is considered the clear favourite of the duel. The only meeting between Tsurenko and Pegula ended in a triumph for the Ukrainian in Indian Wells.

As OBOZREVATEL previously reported, Spanish tennis player Paula Badosa refused to continue her match with Ukrainian Marta Kostiuk at Wimbledon 2023.
