The day before, the renewed Champions League draw started. Already on the first game day, a historic event took place in the tournament, with Bayern Munich running over the guests from Dynamo Zagreb 9-2 on their home field.

The German team became the first to score nine goals in a single Champions League match. Prior to that, Munich scored eight goals against Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund against Legia Warsaw, English Liverpool against Istanbul Besiktas, Real Madrid against Swedish Malmö, and French Monaco against Spanish Deportivo.

English striker Harry Kane scored four times for Bayern Munich in the match against the Croatian champion, converting three penalties. Midfielder Michael Ollist scored a double, while defender Rafael Guerreiro, midfielder Leroy Sane and Leon Goretzka scored one goal each.

Defender Takuya Ogiwara and forward Bruno Petkovic scored for the visitors. Dynamo managed to score two goals within 100 seconds.

After this victory, Bayern Munich topped the overall Champions League standings, as the new format of the tournament does not divide teams into groups, but rather includes their results in a large rating of 36 participants.
