Slovakia will not use Russian legionnaires

The Slovak national team will not use players from the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), hosted by Russia, at the 2024 World Championship. The corresponding decision was made by the Executive Committee of the Slovak Hockey Union (SZLH) on Friday, April 12.

This is the official website of the SZLH. In the 2023/24 season, nine Slovaks played in the KHL: goalkeepers Patrik Rybar (Spartak Moscow), Adam Huska (Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod), defensemen Michal Tchaikovsky (Spartak Moscow), Martin Gernat (Lokomotiv Yaroslavl), Christian Jarosz (Severstal Cherepovets), Mislav Rosandic (Lada Togliatti), forwards Adam Liska (Severstal Cherepovets), Michal Kryshtof (Sochi), Tomas Jurcio (Avangard Omsk).

"Every hockey player who has a Slovak passport and the necessary sports data has the right to represent Slovakia in international competitions. However, due to the fact that the current representatives of the Slovak national team, who are in the KHL, for various reasons - health, personal, family or other - are unavailable to help the national team in the midst of the season, this issue is closed for the World Championship for the Executive Committee and the Slovak national team," the statement said.

The 2024 World Ice Hockey Championship will take place in the Czech cities of Prague and Ostrava from May 10-26. The Russian national team has been suspended from the tournament.
