Russian ice climbing champion Alyona Vlasova died of a tick bite at the age of 35, the Sverdlovsk Region Mountaineering Federation reports. In February 2024, Vlasova won the national championship in high-speed doubles.

"A tragedy in the icebreaker family, yesterday the speedster from Kirovograd, Alyona Vlasova, died suddenly. She is survived by her 10-year-old daughter and husband," the statement reads.

In early June, Alyona was bitten by a tick when she was at her friends' dacha. The next day, she learned in the hospital that the tick was infected with encephalitis.

By the end of June, she developed complications (meningeal encephalitis), followed by intensive care, coma, 3 months on a ventilator, pneumonia with 70% lung damage, and death on October 5.
