Russian triathlete drowns at a competition in Barcelona
Russian Elena Smirnova, who was ranked second in the ranking of amateur triathletes in Russia, drowned during the Ironman competition in Barcelona. Each race in the series consists of a 3.86 km swim, a 180 km road bike ride, and a 42.195 km marathon.
During the water leg, 41-year-old Smirnova sent a distress signal, and was quickly pulled out of the water but could not be saved. She died in an ambulance.

"At the moment, the athlete's body is in Spain, where an investigation is underway, and the results of the autopsy are expected to allow us to draw an accurate conclusion about the causes of the tragedy. The athlete's family wants the body to be returned to Russia as soon as possible," Shot reports, citing a source.
Ironman is considered one of the most difficult competitions due to the fact that there is no rest between stages and the swim takes place in open water. This year in Barcelona, about three thousand athletes took part in it. The winner, Jan Strattmann (Germany), took 7 hours, 28 minutes and 25 seconds to complete all the stages. Among women, Marta Sanchez took first place, covering the distance in 8 hours 31 minutes and 32 seconds.

As OBOZ.UA reported, Chuvashia prosecutor Andrey Fomin drowned during the traditional Chebswim swim along the Volga River, according to the Baza Telegram channel. Fomin, 57, moved to Russia in 2020 from Crimea, where he worked as a deputy "prosecutor" of the republic to Natalia Poklonskaya, and then acted as her deputy when she was elected to the State Duma.
