In Lviv region, a 24-year-old girl had a 14-centimeter worm removed from under her eye
In Lviv, doctors removed a 14-centimeter worm from the eye of a 24-year-old girl. The patient had lived with the parasite for two years.
The woman could even hear it moving, but did not seek medical attention because of ridicule. This was reported by the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
"The Lviv resident sought medical help with painful sensations at the site of a tumor formed in the corner of her eye. Migration of the parasite is characteristic of heartworm disease," said Ella Matiyash, a parasitologist at the Lviv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
After the visit to the doctors, the tumor and the worm were removed from the girl's eye. Doctors emphasize that mosquitoes can carry the worms. At first, a small induration appears at the site of the mosquito bite, which can later grow to the size of a tumor. In addition to the feeling of movement, the site of the parasite's localization may itch, burn, swell, and turn red. There may be complaints of headache and general malaise.
How to protect yourself:
- Take care of repellents - products that repel mosquitoes;
- do not forget about protective equipment for pets;
- periodic deworming of animals, as they are sources of infection.
"And if you have any signs of heartworm disease, consult a specialist!" the doctors emphasized.
As a reminder, doctors in Volyn Oblast removed a 20-centimeter-long worm from a patient's tumor. The parasite entered the woman's body after being bitten by an infected mosquito.
In Lviv, a worm over 10 cm long was removed from a child's eye. Dirofilaria settled under the anterior orbit of a 3-year-old girl.
