"Unexpectedly" said yes: Harlan announced that she is marrying a foreigner. What her fiancé looks like

Italian fencer Luigi Samele proposed marriage to two-time Olympic champion Olha Harlan. The saber fencers decided to formalize their relationship, which they have been in since 2018.

Harlan wrote about this on her Instagram page. "I 'unexpectedly' said yes," joked the most decorated Ukrainian athlete at the Olympic Games, showing a photo with her wedding ring. Interestingly, the day before, our compatriot celebrated her 34th birthday.

The couple started dating when Olha was in the process of divorcing her first husband, fencer Dmytro Boyko. The couple was unable to maintain their relationship due to constant separation.

"I always knew that there was a Luigi Samele, an Italian, a good athlete, a fencer, and a nice guy. In 2017, I didn't see my husband for a long time. I went to tournaments with a friend, but not to fence, just to watch and have fun. And at some competitions, Luigi and I talked," Harlan told DOROTYE.

Samele started fencing with coach Andrea Terenzio. It was this specialist who helped to reveal the talent of the Italian, who was a multi-medalist at the Olympic Games. He has two bronze and two silver medals from London 2012, Tokyo 2020, and Paris 2024.

After Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Luigi helped Olga get her sister and nephew out of the area of rocket attacks and bombing.
