Ukrainian film "20 Days in Mariupol" nominated for Oscar

The Ukrainian film 20 Days in Mariupol by director and videographer Mstyslav Chernov has officially been nominated for the prestigious Oscar 2024 in the Best Feature Documentary category. It will compete with 4 other films for the coveted statuette.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected the film about the Ukrainian hero city, which is currently occupied by Russians, among dozens of other films. This was announced during a YouTube broadcast from California.

The documentary about the first weeks of life in Mariupol after the full-scale invasion was presented in two nominations at once – Best Documentary Feature and Best International Feature.

"20 Days in Mariupol" is a documentary by Associated Press journalist and Pulitzer Prize-winning author Mstyslav Chernov. Together with Chernov, photographer Yevhen Malolietka and producer Vasylisa Stepanenko worked on the film.

The film tells the story of the beginning of a full-scale war - the bombing of residential buildings and a maternity hospital, constant shelling, and how ordinary Mariupol residents survived in inhumane conditions. "20 Days in Mariupol" by Mstyslav Chernov became the highest-grossing documentary in Ukraine.
