Ukraine has already made progress in the production of mortar and artillery shells. Today, their production has reached millions of units per year. However, the shortage of explosives prevents it from continuing at this level and increasing the pace.

Herman Smetanin, Minister for Strategic Industries and former Director General of Ukroboronprom, told Reuters. He noted that the potential of Ukrainian producers is much greater, but they are forced to adapt to the supply.

"The only problem we face now is gunpowder and explosives. The amount of explosives supplied to Ukraine means the amount of shells we have," the agency quoted the minister as saying.

According to him, the country is now producing its own artillery shells, including 155 mm caliber, which are used in heavy artillery that has been supplied by NATO allies.

"However, this is still not enough," Mr. Smetanin said. Even at the current rate, Ukraine's production of shells is much less than Russia's.

Mr. Smetanin added that one of his main tasks in his new position (he joined the Cabinet of Ministers from Ukroboronprom in September of this year) was to establish mass production of Ukrainian missiles. However, Ukraine is also facing difficulties in this area of production due to supply issues. He did not disclose what exactly the supply problems are for this production.

As reported by OBOZ.UA, the fact that the Ukrainian military-industrial complex is already producing its own 155 mm caliber shells was previously confirmed by the Presidential Advisor on Strategic Issues Oleksandr Kamyshyn. However, he also noted that "this is a very complicated process" that has its own difficulties.
