Love them or hate them, electric SUVs are taking the market by storm. They combine quiet handling and a long range with the practical versatility of an all-terrain vehicle.

Autocar journalists have already proven themselves in the best way. They have compiled their rating of best off-road electric cars. All of them were released in 2024.

Skoda Enyaq

The new Skoda Enyaq offers the best combination of affordability, practicality, range, and ease of handling. Yes, it's not a superstar in any of these areas, but it's a fantastic all-around vehicle. When the Enyaq was launched in 2021, it made better use of the Volkswagen MEB base than the earlier VW ID 4 or Audi Q4 E-tron. And now it has also boasts of updates to most of its shortcomings. The Enyaq's short hood and square rear end give it plenty of interior space. Standard adaptive cruise control and regenerative braking petals make driving intuitive.

Kia EV9

If you're looking for an electric SUV rather than a cheaper, more efficient sedan or hatchback with better handling, it's probably because you need a lot of space. Few cars handle space better than the huge Kia EV9. Yes, there are bigger electric cars out there, but this one is truly versatile in its capabilities. Its seats fold down easily and there is a cable storage compartment in the front. The EV9 is not just space on wheels. The twin-engine versions offer high performance, although there are plans to expand the lineup with a single-engine model. Very stylish for a seven-seater SUV, it offers commendable luxury, efficiency and a good range.

Polestar 3

The largest car in the Polestar brand is also one of the best electric SUVs you can buy today, and there's really a lot to like about it. A large, spacious electric SUV with a roomy interior packed with next-generation technology, the Polestar looks like few others on the road. It offers from 483 to 510 hp of power. The energy is provided by a 107 kWh battery that can travel up to 630 km, or 560 km if you choose the Performance Pack. It can also be charged at speeds up to 250 kW. Inside, the Polestar 3 is spacious and chic, with chrome materials and soft-touch textiles. A huge touchscreen is located in the center of the dashboard with integrated Google Maps, as well as wireless smartphone connectivity in Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Despite its size and 2.5 tons of kerb weight, the Polestar 3 is perfectly suited for driving at high speeds. It has tactile and precise handling, which puts it far ahead of many competitors in the segment.

Ford Explorer

The electric Ford Explorer may not look very inspiring, but it's actually a respectable electric SUV with many advantages. Based on the Volkswagen MEB, the Explorer is more than just a redesigned ID 4. It outperforms many of its competitors in handling, including the Tesla Model Y, and its interior is stylish and spacious. It also offers excellent range for its class thanks to an entry-level 52 kWh battery that can travel 390 km on a single charge. Its advanced 77 kWh unit extends the range to 600 km - the highest range available for any vehicle on VW's MEB. Power output is 168 hp on single rear-engine models and reaches 335 hp on dual-wheel drive and dual-engine models.

Kia EV6

This is a great electric SUV that will suit the whole family. It is comfortable and unstoppably fast in its most powerful specification. In this case, the EV6 boasts a huge range of 580 km, and the charging speed is also near the best in its class at 258 kW. Power starts at 226 horsepower, which is more than enough for most drivers, while the top-of-the-line Kia EV6 GT produces a whopping 577 horsepower. Although mechanically similar to the Hyundai Ioniq 5, the Kia EV6 is overall slightly better in handling, has a pleasant steering feel and provides a comfortable ride.

Tesla Model Y

The Tesla Model Y is due for a major update soon, but for now, it still offers best-in-class performance for electric SUVs. Yes, it has faced a lot of competitors since its launch in 2021, but it still holds its own spot, providing 455 km of range as standard or 530 km in long-range vehicles. The extremely minimalist style of Tesla's interior and exterior, as well as the sufficient demandingness of the driving experience, will not suit everyone, but you can't argue with the advantages - the Model Y is extremely spacious for its size. It also has a good price and speed.

Hyundai Ioniq 5 N

The electric Ioniq 5 N offers more than just a stiff suspension and enormous power. It has a reinforced body, a properly designed limited-slip differential on the rear axle, adaptive dampers and, on top of that, a very clever engineering design. It loves to rotate on and off the power, and if you want it to, it can simulate a six-speed gearbox and a gasoline engine.

Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV

Would you like your car to take over some of the driving? Mercedes-Benz was the first manufacturer to offer a true adaptive cruise control system back in 1999 and is still at the forefront of the market. It’s not easily spooked and slows down gradually when others brake hard. In addition to this, the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV offers systems such as lane keeping assist and speeding warning. As a rule, they do not interfere with driving, and they are also quite easy to turn off.

Genesis Electrified GV70 SUV

The electrified GV70 is designed for drivers who want a luxurious, ultra-fast electric vehicle that retains the look and feel of a traditional car. There is only one version with a 77.4 kWh battery that provides a range of 450 km. Yes, these are not top figures, but the model has a power of 483 hp. With it, the car accelerates to 100 km/h in just 4.2 seconds. The interior is still one of the best in the class thanks to the excellent quality of materials, comfort, and noise insulation.

BMW iX

Rolling off the German automaker's assembly line, the iX has top-class handling, instant and effortless performance, and a decent real-world range. Meanwhile, its interior is more reminiscent of a large, ultra-luxurious BMW i3 than a sports sedan. It pleases with open spaces, soft shapes and, in some variants, a choice of unusual but quite attractive materials.
