Fail quickly and require a lot to repair: which luxury "dream cars" are not worth buying

Alina MilsentNews
What luxury cars you should not buy

Luxury cars can be not only a measure of wealthiness but also a worthy long-term investment. However, luxury is not always synonymous with quality - before you splurge on the luxury car of your dreams, you should note that some brands are simply not worth it.

According to experts, some models wear out quickly, require exorbitantly high maintenance and repairs, and other typical problems. Finance Yahoo has published a rating of luxury cars that are best avoided.

Jaguar XJ

Jaguar XJ will bring you a lot of technical problems, experts say. Matas Buzelis, an automotive expert at CarVertical, emphasized that the latest generation XJs suffer from constant problems with suspension and electrical systems. In addition, the touchscreen and other important electronics are very slow and often freeze.

Cadillac XTS

The Cadillac XTS is not worth its high price. "You can find many other vehicles with the same specs and features for a much lower price," the expert emphasized. Status and luxury enthusiasts simply pay extra for the elite Cadillac name, and the only exceptional feature of the XTS is the hybrid air and magnetic suspension, but it is too stiff and expensive.

Tesla Model S

This Tesla model doesn't fit into the luxury category at all. "DDespite its booming popularity, the only luxurious things about the Tesla Model S are the acceleration and price," Buzelis said. The starting price of Tesla is almost $100 thousand, but the build quality and interior materials are the same as in economy class cars. The Model S has dozens of common problems, such as a malfunctioning media control unit, broken suspension arms, and faulty touchscreens. Tesla's door handles may even get stuck from time to time.

Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio

This Alfa Romeo model often requires repairs. "The Quadrifoglio is an exciting machine that does everything you want on a track. However, many customers experience severe issues just a few thousand miles after leaving a dealership — sensors, connectors, bearings and control units fail one after another," Buzelis warned.

Maserati Quattroporte

The Maserati Quattroporte is losing its value faster than other cars in this class. Maseratis are expensive, luxurious and sporty cars that not everyone can afford. "In 2019, Business Insider calculated that Maserati Quattroporte suffered a whopping 72.2% depreciation over the first three years. Their performance numbers are poor, many materials are cheap and overall build quality is pathetic, so the Quattroporte is extremely overpriced," the expert said.

BMW 7 Series

Be prepared for high maintenance costs if you decide to buy a BMW 7 Series. This is a full-size sedan that is famous for its advanced technologies, luxurious interior and powerful engines. "However, the car’s complex systems and high-end materials can lead to expensive repairs and maintenance costs," said Kyle MacDonald, Vice President at Force by Mojio.

Mercedes-Benz S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is losing value quickly, so it's definitely not the best option if you're planning to resell the car. Luis Johnson, automotive technician and founder of BatteryQuery, noted that the S-Class is often considered the benchmark among luxury sedans, but its high cost and rapid depreciation can be a significant burden for buyers.

Audi A8

The Audi A8 is definitely not synonymous with reliability. "This car’s sleek design and advanced features can be enticing, but its reliability record has been mixed. Consumers may find themselves frequently visiting the mechanic for repairs and maintenance, leading to significant expenses," Johnson emphasized.

Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale

The Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale is not the most practical car, so think twice before spending money on this model. Joe Giranda, managing director of CFR Classic, a company specializing in international car transportation, said, "When it comes to everyday practicality and comfort, it falls short compared to other models in this segment."

Rolls Royce Ghost

Experts say that the technological features of the Ghost do not correspond to its price category. "Its lack of technological features makes it outdated when compared to its competitors. Maintenance costs are also very expensive, making this car not worth the money for most people," Giranda pointed out.

Maserati Ghibli

In addition to the initial cost, you will have to regularly spend inflated amounts on gasoline. "Even though the Maserati Ghibli is a speedy and elegant model, buying this car will make you regret it in the long run," said Adam Grant, automotive specialist and founder of Car Fuel Advisor. Compared to other luxury cars in this class, this car has low fuel efficiency.

Tesla Model X

According to Grant, the Tesla Model X is likely to require frequent, expensive repairs. "While Tesla is certainly one of the most luxurious car brands in the market, [the Tesla Model X] has several faults including braking, all-wheel drivetrain, upholstery trim and malfunctioning gull-wing doors that don’t even open completely," the expert said.
