The need for communication
One of the main reasons for frequent visits in the USSR was the need for social interaction. In Soviet times, opportunities for entertainment and leisure were limited. Many people lived in communal apartments where privacy was a luxury. Therefore, going to visit became a kind of escape from the daily routine and a chance to socialize in a more private atmosphere.
Political topics
Perhaps the only safe place where you could talk about political topics without fear of prying ears was in the kitchen. During the Soviet era, it was almost impossible to criticize the authorities or express your dissatisfaction in public places, as an accidental denunciation could result in dismissal or even imprisonment.
Large families
In the harsh Soviet environment, people who were related by blood tried to stay together because it was easier to survive. You could exchange scarce food, gossip, and not be afraid of being reported.
Everyone knew not only cousins, but also more distant relatives, and on holidays they all came from other cities and countries and often stayed for more than one evening.
Lack of video communication
Today, people can regularly communicate in messengers, even via video, but in the USSR, there was no such luxury. Even for those who had home phones, a call to another city was very expensive, so it was easier to go to relatives and talk in person.
Children were not left at home
Previously, almost every family had at least 2 children, but they were not left at home alone, and the culture of nannies was not developed. Therefore, people visited each other with whole families and organized lavish celebrations.
