What will happen if you drink sparkling water every day: three consequences can unpleasantly surprise you

Have you ever thought about how drinking sparkling water affects your body? Everything we eat and drink affects us, especially what we consume daily.

If you drink sparkling water regularly, here's what you need to know about how it affects your body. Three consequences may be unpleasantly surprising, Parade writes.

Is soda good for you?

Before understanding how soda affects the body, it is important to consider its nutritional value. Amanda Saucedo, PhD, a registered dietitian who specializes in gut health, says that in general, sparkling water is a healthy drink.

"It can be a delicious way to meet your hydration goals. Sparkling water can be refreshing and add some flavor without the added sugar," she says.

Kirsten Jackson, RD, a board-certified dietitian specializing in irritable bowel syndrome, agrees, saying that sparkling water is a better beverage choice than sodas that are high in sugar or artificial sweeteners.

However, as with most foods, not all sparkling water is equally good.

If you are a regular drinker and want to ensure that the beverage you choose supports your health rather than destroys it, both nutritionists advise checking the composition.

If the sparkling water you see contains sugar or artificial ingredients, it's best to choose a sugar-free one.

If you have a sensitive stomach, Jackson advises avoiding bottles with sweeteners such as maltitol or sorbitol, which can cause bloating or diarrhea.

If the sparkling water you drink is simply made with carbonated water and natural flavors or fruit, it's a good healthy drink option.

Now the big question arises: what happens to your body when you drink sparkling water every day?

As Saucedo explained, sparkling water can be a healthy drink to stock up on if you don't like the taste of plain water.

She says that a higher level of hydration will make a person feel more energetic, reduce constipation, and headaches and help prevent dry skin.

At the same time, the doctor does not recommend relying on it as the main method of hydration. If you don't like the taste of plain water, try adding fruits, vegetables, or herbs to it, such as a slice of lemon, orange, or cucumber.

If you're used to drinking plain water but decide to start drinking sparkling water, both nutritionists say you can expect some side effects. In particular, sparkling water increases the likelihood of burping and a feeling of gas.

Saucedo adds that some people may experience diarrhea if they are particularly sensitive to sugar alcohols.

According to Saucedo, what you combine with sparkling water matters as well. If you combine it with foods such as beans, lentils, peas, cabbage, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, or whole grains, you are more likely to experience side effects. At the same time, even though they are unpleasant, they do not have a harmful effect on the body.

In addition, Jackson notes that since sparkling water is slightly acidic, it can lead to tooth enamel decay if consumed in excess. Therefore, if you notice any changes in the condition of your teeth, consider it a sign that you should cut back on your favorite drink.

In general, both nutritionists claim that daily consumption of sparkling water will not affect the body if you observe moderation. It is also worth repeating that nothing can replace plain water when it comes to hydration.
