Two Ukrainian films are on the list of the best films of 2024 according to the British Film Institute
The British Film Institute has included two Ukrainian films in its list of the best films of 2024. These films are "Peaceful People" by Oksana Karpovych and "You Are Space" by Pavlo Ostrikov, which were screened at various festivals abroad.
The organization interviewed 118 film experts, each of whom had to choose only the 10 best films in their opinion. The list of four included films by Ukrainian directors. The experts' choices are available on the BFI (British Film Institute) website.
Two experts voted for each of the selected Ukrainian films. The total list includes 394 films that premiered in 2024.
"You Are Space" by Pavlo Ostrikov
The plot centers on a Ukrainian former trucker, Andrii Melnyk, who turned out to be the last person in the universe after an explosion on Earth. He and his robot friend go into outer space and live their routine lives until a French woman, Catherine, gets in touch. Then the protagonist's journey focuses on finding that girl and requires a lot of effort to cross the entire galaxy.
The debut film by director Pavlo Ostrikov premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7. At the time, the film was named one of the best projects in Ukraine in 2024. "You Are Space" aroused great emotions in the foreign audience and received a standing ovation after the screening.
The film later won the top award at the Strasbourg Film Festival in France. This victory paved the way for the film to compete for the Golden Melies, the most prestigious European genre film award.
"Peaceful People" by Oksana Karpovych
Oksana Karpovych's documentary consists of intercepted conversations of the Russian occupiers. The filmmaker listened to more than 30 hours of recordings, which were previously published on social media by the SBU and special services.
The film contrasts two worlds: the world of Ukrainians fighting for their freedom, and the world of Russian occupiers who bring destruction and death. The film is a powerful testimony to the crimes of the Russian army and at the same time evokes sympathy for ordinary Russians who have become hostages of propaganda.
The world premiere took place at the Berlin International Film Festival, and the film was also included in the qualifying list for the Oscar's Feature Documentary category.
