There's a boom in heavy blankets around the world: how they affect sleep and whether they're really that useful. Explanation by scientists
Ukrainian housewives have long known that a heavy but reliable down blanket called a perina, will keep them warm in winter. In recent years, the boom in heavy blankets has been noticeable around the world.
According to scientists, a heavy blanket helps fight insomnia. And some experts say that such blankets can even dispel anxiety, AP writes.
What is a heavy blanket and what is its effect
These are blankets that have extra weight in the form of glass beads, pellets, cotton, or other filler. Scientists have studied several positive signs of such bedding attributes.
"The tight touch of a heavy blanket can calm the brain's 'subconscious fight or flight' response. Evenly distributed weight tells your body that "you're in a calm environment," said Dr. Neil Walia, a sleep medicine expert at UCLA Health.
The extra pressure can also signal the brain to release the so-called love hormone, also known as oxytocin. It is produced during bonding and cuddling, and can also reduce anxiety, Walia added.
And Swedish scientists have found that heavy blankets help fight insomnia. People who sleep under a 6-8 kg blanket have better sleep quality and feel less sleepy during the day, according to a study at JCSM.
During the experiment, researchers from Sweden found that 92% of people who slept under heavy blankets for 12 months showed improved sleep. In addition to insomnia, the symptoms of mental disorders decreased. 63% of the respondents reported that they felt a decrease in anxiety while using heavy blankets, and 78% said that such a blanket acts as a sedative.
How to use a heavy blanket
Experts say that most healthy adults should choose a blanket that is about 10% of their body weight. For example, a person who weighs 60 kilograms can choose a blanket weighing 6 kilograms.
Experts emphasize that heavy blankets are not recommended for infants or toddlers, as they can interfere with their movements and breathing.
Also, people with sleep apnea, sleep disorders, or respiratory problems should consult a doctor before using a weighted blanket, experts say.
