Scientists are warning residents of New York and neighboring states that giant Joro spiders, known for their yellow-gray color, may appear on the East Coast this summer. According to the University of Georgia's Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health, the spiders are native to East Asia and were first spotted in Georgia in 2014.

A significant reason for the spread of the Joro spider is its ability to fly. It releases webs that catch wind currents, which allows the spider to make imprecise wind-driven flight, nbcnewyork reports.

But, according to a recent study by Clemson University, these spiders are not overly venomous and pose a threat only to other insects. That is, this species is relatively harmless to humans and pets. Still, their appearance and size are terrifying.

Joro spiders have a body length of about 2.5 cm, but their legs can be up to 10 cm long, meaning they can reach the size of a human palm. Females are larger and brightly colored, while males are brown and smaller.

According to a study by the University of Georgia, these spiders will only bite if they are cornered. However, their fangs are not likely to be large enough to pierce human skin. That is, the bite of this spider can be compared to the bite of a bee.

In addition, according to the researchers, these spiders are not in a hurry to weave their webs inside houses. They do it on the exteriors of buildings. If there is a need to move the Joro spider, researchers advise using a broom or stick to transfer it to another place.
