How to properly feed a plum: there will be twice as many fruits
Plums are not only delicious but also extremely nutritious and healthy. They contain many vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants that have a positive effect on human health.
To get a plentiful harvest, it is important not only to properly care for the plum tree, but also to provide it with the necessary nutrients. How to do this, zaxid.net told.
You need to take care of trees and feed them not only after winter, but also in summer. In the warm season, plums are especially in need of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium.
The age of the tree
The periods of fertilization for plum trees are directly affected by their age. If the tree is under 1 year old, then it does not need to be fertilized at all.
Young trees under the age of 3 are first fed in early May using urea. Then fertilizers are applied in June and late August.
If the tree is older than 3 years, then they must be fertilized in the spring, during fruiting, and in the fall.
Signs of nutrient deficiency
You can tell which nutrients your plum tree lacks by its appearance:
- Reddish-brown leaves with curled edges indicate a potassium deficiency;
- Brown leaves with brown edging and veins indicate a lack of magnesium;
- Gray leaves and abnormal fruit structure are signs of poor potassium absorption, which also indicates a deficiency of phosphorus in the soil;
- Yellow upper leaves of the tree indicate a lack of iron.
Recommendations for fertilizing
It is strictly forbidden to use fresh manure to feed plums. It contains high levels of ammonia, which can seriously damage the root system of the tree and even lead to its death. It is better to use rotted manure or other organic fertilizers.
Also, to achieve the best result, it is worth combining the use of mineral and organic fertilizers. This will effectively provide the plum with all the necessary nutrients. You also need to regularly change the composition of the fertilizers used.
For safe fertilization of plums that will not cause burns on the leaves, fertilizers should be applied either early in the morning or after sunset. If you use liquid formulations, spray them at a distance of 40-50 cm from the tree trunk.
