Do you have to wash flower pots before reusing them: the answer is simple
Repotting is an important step in caring for indoor plants. Over time, the soil in the pot becomes depleted, loses nutrients, and can turn sour. The root system has a tendency to grow, so the flowers will become cramped in a small container. In addition, transplanting allows you to inspect the roots for pests or diseases.
You will probably save the container for reuse in gardening, for example, to have a backup for other plants or to plant seedlings. Experts explained whether you need to wash flower pots before reusing them.
Do you need to wash containers for indoor flowers
When growing indoor and outdoor plants, you want to give them the best environment possible to grow and thrive. After all, you're investing time and money, so it's worth taking one more step to ensure the best results.
"It is important to clean pots or containers before planting new plants or reusing the same pot. Cleaning the pots helps prevent the spread of pests, diseases, or pathogens that may have accumulated on the surfaces," said Amy Hovis, a specialist.
"Clean, sterile potting soil and fresh soil are the best way to grow a healthy plant," explained expert Parker Andes.
"There is always a risk that the pot has bacteria or pathogens in it, and reusing it without first disinfecting it can potentially spread pathogens to other plants.
How to clean and disinfect garden containers
- Check the pot for cracks or damage that could affect its stability or quality.
- Experts advise using a vinegar solution by mixing equal parts water and white vinegar. After immersing the pot in the solution, leave it for about 10 minutes.
- After soaking, you can brush or sponge the pot to remove any remaining dirt or stains.
- Be sure to rinse the containers thoroughly to make sure there are no traces of baking soda left on them.
- Wait until the container is completely dry, as moisture can promote the growth of fungi or bacteria.
- In general, experts do not recommend using bleach, but there is one exception. A plastic container for orchids can be disinfected with a bleach solution by mixing it with water in a 1:9 ratio.
