Can orchids be sprayed: how not to harm flowers
Orchids are considered to be among the most demanding indoor plants. The slightest draft, insufficient light, or improper watering regimen instantly affects the condition of the plant and its flower stalks.
Not everyone knows what the optimal moisture content of an orchid is – some say that flowers cannot be sprayed, while others insist that this procedure will only harm them. OBOZ.UA figured out how to take care of plants and whether to spray them.
First of all, experts note that spraying can be useful for increasing humidity, which has a positive effect on the condition of plants. It is important to follow a few rules to avoid negative consequences, as excessive moisture can cause dark spots, and flower buds can even start to rot.
How often should you spray your orchids
The frequency of spraying depends on the weather and the humidity level in the room. As a general rule, it is recommended to humidify several times a week. In the summer heat, you can increase the number of procedures to several times a day. In addition, orchids should be placed away from direct sunlight.
What water to use for spraying
Ordinary tap water is not suitable. Use soft, purified, or settled water to avoid the accumulation of sediment and harmful substances in the soil and on the leaves.
Optimal water temperature
Sudden temperature changes can cause stress in plants, which will negatively affect flowering. The water for spraying should be at room temperature or slightly warmer.
Choose a high-quality sprayer to create a misty stream with small droplets, and the water is evenly distributed over the surface of the leaves.
When to spray
During the daytime, when the sun is particularly active, spraying can negatively affect orchids. The best time is in the morning or the first half of the day when the plant receives enough light and the temperature is not too high.
The procedure should be carried out carefully so that water does not get on the growth points and drops do not settle on the flowers. Excessive moisture on the peduncles leads to the appearance of dark spots, and on the growth points – to rot.
By the way, it's quite easy to tell if an orchid lacks water – its flower stalks will begin to wither and fall off quickly, and the leaves will fade and become inelastic and yellow. Florists say that an orchid can dry out even because it has been flooded with water before. Excessive watering causes a lack of air exchange and the roots can simply suffocate and wither.
