A giant asteroid the size of two soccer fields is heading towards Earth
An asteroid about the size of two football fields is heading towards Earth. Astronomers emphasize that it will rush past our planet at a short distance in mid-September.
According to experts, such a close approach occurs on average once every 10 years. However, scientists reassure that this distance is safe and does not pose a threat of collision with the Earth, the New York Post reports.
Scientists say that asteroid 2024 ON, at least 220 meters wide, will be visible from the Northern Hemisphere. The inhabitants of our planet will be able to observe its approach on September 15. It will fly past the Earth at the closest possible distance.
Astronomers emphasize that the asteroid will move near the Earth at an astronomically close but still safe distance. According to the Virtual Telescope Project, such a close approach occurs on average once every 10 years.
After all, the asteroid 2024 ON will fly past the Earth at a distance of about one million kilometers, which is about 2.6 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
According to NASA, asteroids are fragments of rock left over from the formation of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago.
