World football champion charged with aggravated gang rape

Argentine footballer Gonzalo Montiel, who scored the winning penalty in the 2022 FIFA World Cup final against France, has been charged with gang rape. According to Marca, the alleged act of violence against his guest took place in January 2019 during a party to celebrate Gonzalo's birthday.

The incident took place at the Sevilla player's home and consisted of "aggravated sexual assault by a group of people". The victim's lawyer, Raquel Hermida, said that the victim had a "small, short relationship" with Montiel, who invited her to meet his family and insisted that she attend a party in La Matanza (a municipality in Buenos Aires).

The victim is a model and does not drink alcohol, but after trying two drinks, "she fainted," the lawyer said. The woman was then "thrown out of Montiel's house" and "she does not know how many people were involved in the violence", the lawyer added, and "she does not know how she got home yet".

The 26-year-old played for Argentine club River Plate from 2016 to 2021, when he won the Libertadores Cup, as well as several domestic trophies.
