Ukraine can enter the EU roaming zone

The EU Council has approved a proposal to make Ukraine part of the roaming zone of the European Union. Thus, Europe gave the green light to introduce free mobile roaming for Ukrainians.

This was announced by the Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine Mykhaylo Fedorov. The final decision has yet to be approved by the association's trade committee.

After the completion of all procedures, the price of calls to loved ones in Europe for Ukrainians will be reduced. In addition, there will be no need to change SIM cards while traveling around Europe, Fedorov said.

Fedorov reported on the EU Council decision on roaming for Ukraine

For its part, the Ukrainian government has already adopted a decision that will allow it to conclude a roaming agreement with the EU in 2023. "Joining the EU roaming space is not just about abolishing call charges, but also about modern, transparent European rules in telecommunications," Prime Minister Denys Shmygal explained.

Roaming allows you to use a mobile operator in another country without changing your tariffs or SIM card. For example, if a Ukrainian uses his phone in Egypt, he is automatically connected to local mobile operators. And if he receives a call from Ukraine while he is in Egypt, he will have to pay for an incoming call, the cost of which depends on the operator. In general, this fee is significantly higher than the cost of calls within the same country.

That is, when Ukraine joins the EU roaming zone, Ukrainians in Europe will not have to pay extra for the use of mobile communications. Since 2017, such a rule has been in effect between EU countries. For example, a Pole can use his phone in Germany as well as at home.

This will allow Ukrainians to travel freely to Europe with their regular SIM cards even after the war is over. And for the duration of the war, European mobile operators provided Ukrainian subscribers with preferential calling and Internet access.

As reported OBOZREVATEL, in February 2023, the European Commission officially proposed to join Ukraine to the roaming zone of the EU. It is assumed that already in 2023 Ukraine may become a member of the EU roaming zone.
