Stoltenberg names a condition for Ukraine's accession to NATO and promises support on the way to the Alliance
The Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, Jens Stoltenberg, said that a substantive discussion on Ukraine's accession to NATO would take place immediately after the end of the war with Russia. Our country is capable of meeting all the standards of an Alliance member, provided that it fully restores its sovereignty.
These words were said during the summit in Brussels. Stoltenberg noted that NATO's position always maintains an open door, but it would be premature to admit the Ukrainian state in the near future.
"Ukraine will become a member of the Alliance. But we are aware that first we need to ensure Ukraine's victory, and then we will make a promise," he stressed.
The Secretary General noted that, for its part, the Alliance will continue to provide maximum assistance to the Armed Forces and the people of Ukraine, who are desperately fighting the occupiers for their independence. Such actions can only be interpreted as accelerating the process of our country's accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
NATO is developing a plan for long-term support for Ukraine. It should strengthen our country's defence capabilities, strengthen the army and help us switch from Soviet military equipment to modern Western equipment.
As OBOZREVATEL reported, on April 4, Finland officially became a member of the North Atlantic Alliance. A solemn ceremony was held at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, during which the country's flag was raised among the flags of other countries. There are now 31 countries in the Alliance.
