Smell like a boutique: how to get rid of musty odors in the closet

It is better to flavor things with natural means

Like any enclosed space, a wardrobe can eventually fill with an unpleasant musty odor that will be transmitted to your clothes. Even freshly laundered and new clothes will feel like old and worn clothes because of this. Therefore, it is important to know how to get rid of the unpleasant odor in the closet.

OBOZ.UA asked about life hacks that will help to return a fresh smell to the wardrobe. And tells you about the most effective ones. With these life hacks, your closet will have a wonderful scent, as if in an expensive boutique.

Why does the smell of mustiness appear in the closet

There can be several reasons for this problem. The main one is moisture. If you put the laundry on the shelves before it is completely dry, or if you do not deal with high humidity in the room, microscopic water droplets will settle on the textiles and cause a musty smell. And in the worst case scenario, it can provoke the development of mold on the inner walls of the wardrobe.

The cause of this odor is bacteria that thrive in a humid environment. The more of them appear on things, the dirtier they become. Hence, another reason is to store clean items with worn ones. Pre-owned items become a breeding ground for bacteria and pass them on to newly washed items. Therefore, it is better to store clean and worn clothes separately.

Also, out-of-season items that have been stored for a long time can become stale. Moths can grow in them, which is not conducive to freshness.

How to get rid of an unpleasant odor in your wardrobe

If you are faced with this problem, the first step is to audit your clothes and send them to the laundry. Also, take out all your clothes and wash the inside of the closet with baking soda. Only when it is completely dry should you put things back. Make sure they are all dry too.

Place cloth bags with salt, baking soda, or activated charcoal on the shelves. These products have both moisture-absorbing and deodorizing properties. It is better to place them under the far wall of the cabinet, as ventilation is worst there. Replace these bags from time to time, as salt, soda, and charcoal will absorb moisture and lose their properties over time. And make sure that the contents of the bags do not come into contact with your clothes to avoid staining them.

In this case, bagged tea also works well. Even the cheapest tea bags effectively eliminate foreign flavors. You can choose both green and black - they work equally well to freshen the air. You should replace this flavor once every 1-2 weeks.

How to safely flavor your closet

Chemical fragrances can leave things smelling too pungent, so experts advise using natural products. For example, you can buy ready-made sachets filled with flower petals and aromatic herbs in the store. An additional advantage is that they repel moths.

Another way to avoid overdoing the scent is to put open packets of solid soap with your clothes. Or place bowls of finely grated cosmetics on the shelves.

And finally, it's always good to use the power of essential oils. You can drip your favorite scent onto salt, baking soda, or activated charcoal, which you use to fight humidity in your closet. Then the bags with the filler will also become a source of wonderful fragrance. And the disappearance of the smell will be a signal that it is time to replace the product.
