Russia has achieved two key goals of its invasion of Ukraine: Prystayko points out the Kremlin's plan
The Ukrainian ambassador to the UK, Vadym Pristayko, said that one of Russia's key goals was to secure a land bridge from the Russian Federation to Crimea. The occupiers achieved this goal during the invasion in 2022.
The ambassador told this in an exclusive interview with Newsweek. In his opinion, Russia's ultimate goal in the war may be to retain power over the land corridor.
Thus, according to Pristayko, if hostilities were to end now - as some world leaders are calling for - Russia would retain a land corridor from Crimea to its borders. That, according to the ambassador, was still considered a success for Moscow.
"They wanted it, and they have it. Obviously, the Kerch Bridge can't serve more than 2 million people," the ambassador hinted at the bridge connecting Crimea to Russia, which was built by the occupiers after the annexation of the Ukrainian peninsula in 2014.
He noted that the Kremlin primarily aimed to provide water to the peninsula, and they also needed a large power plant that could supply the region. Yes, the Russians took over the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant.
"I've said from the beginning that it was actually what Russia wanted and that's why they would have attacked us," Prystayko said. "Maybe they didn't go all the way (to Kyiv - Ed.). They actually did because they saw an opportunity. But they didn't need to."
Note that the president of Ukraine made it clear that there can be no talk of peace talks with Russia until the Russians leave all the occupied territories of Ukraine. Thus, a future Ukrainian counteroffensive is hoped to be the beginning of Russia's collapse, while signals from the Kremlin indicate that Putin is ready for a long war.
For example, Zelensky's aide Andriy Sibiga stated that Kyiv might be ready to resume peace talks with Moscow when Ukrainian troops reach Crimea's doorstep after the upcoming counteroffensive in the south.
"The prevailing view is that Crimea will be a specific point at which we will have to think hard," Prystayko argues. "I like the view that the east is not the problem - it will have to be fired. When we get to the point where we have to fire Crimea, we'll think twice."
At the same time, the ambassador does not rule out that the Armed Forces of Ukraine may launch their counteroffensive precisely from the territory of Crimea, which would be even more unexpected for the occupiers.
"By the way, this could all be part of the fog of war again," the ambassador noted. "We might attack Crimea first, because everyone expects us to go east."
Earlier it was reported that Putin switched the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to Moscow time. The terrorist document refers to Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions.
