Surovikin is in Russia, but he has been stripped of his powers

The aggressor country Russia has not yet decided on the fate of the deputy commander of the joint group of Russian troops in Ukraine, General Sergey Surovikin, who is being held and interrogated after the failed rebellion of the head of the PMC "Wagner" Yevgeniy Prigozhin. The Russian general was partially deprived of his powers.

This was said by the representative of the Main Directorate of intelligence of the Ministry of defense of Ukraine Andriy Yusov in the air of the telethon on Monday, July 17. He added that Surovikin is on the territory of Russia.

As Yusov noted, after the failed rebellion of the Wagnerites, who nearly staged a military coup in Russia, "toads are competing with vipers," and Surovikin has been effectively stripped of his powers.

"If we talk about his further fate, we will see, it has not been decided yet," the Ukrainian intelligence representative added.

The Wall Street Journal, citing sources, earlier wrote that Surovikin was being held and interrogated in Moscow. He was detained after Prigozhin's "mutiny" began, but Surovikin has not yet been charged.

In addition to him, other Russian military commanders were detained, suspended or dismissed. According to one of the newspaper's sources, Surovikin allegedly knew about the plans for the "mutiny," although he was not involved in it.

Russia tried to deny such rumors, but the media reported that the general had been detained by the FSB. On June 29, Surovikin's daughter said that allegedly "nothing happened" to him, and Peskov advised to contact the Russian Defense Ministry. However, on July 3, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu gathered all the generals at a meeting except Surovikin.

Russian human rights activist Vladimir Osechkin claimed that Surovikin, as well as the first deputy chief of the Russian General Staff, Vladimir Alekseev, were not only aware of Prigozhin's preparation of the mutiny, but also contributed to its realization.

According to his data, the mutiny was prepared for more than 8 months, and Surovikin and Alekseev gave verbal commands to units of the Russian army not to resist the "Wagnerites".

As reported by OBOZREVATEL, the UK intelligence said that the public appearance of the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Federation Valery Gerasimov after the mutiny of PMC "Wagner" may indicate the removal of Surovikin. For the first time along with Gerasimov was Surovikin's deputy Viktor Afzalov, whose authority is probably trying to raise in this way.
