Julia Roberts and Madonna's daughter: how the Januhairy trendy movement promotes natural beauty

The January Januhairy movement was trending among the stars even before its creation

For the past six years, the Januhairy movement has been gaining popularity in January, the purpose of which is to show your natural beauty by giving up removing body hair for at least a month. American stars are happy to support this flash mob, and some have almost completely given up razors.

The Januhairy movement even has its own Instagram page, where it promotes this kind of body positivity not only in January but all year round. This trend tries to normalize the phenomenon of female body hair in society. Stars like Julia Roberts and Leon Lourdes joined the flash mob a long time ago and are not ashamed to be "not perfect."

Both the singer Madonna and her daughter Leon Lourdes have appeared in public with hairy legs and armpits. Although they received a flurry of criticism, the stars did not stop supporting their naturalness.

Julia Roberts was not shy about her hair back at the premiere of Notting Hill in 1999. Roberts admits that it was not a feminist statement but rather "part of the things I do as a human being on the planet, for myself," she said in 2018, CNN reports.

"Armpit hair continues to be cited as the most disgusting or difficult thing for people to deal with. It drives people really crazy because it's perceived as a violation of gender rules and traditional femininity more than leg hair," Breanne Fahs, a professor of women's and gender studies, told CNN.

CNN claims that the hatred of body hair began because of changes in fashion: clothes that revealed more skin, such as sleeveless tops and higher hemlines that showed more of the legs. Various advertisements of the time called shaving a "well-groomed" woman's solution to an "uncomfortable personal problem."

That's why back in 2019, British Laura Jackson launched the Januhairy trend to make women love themselves with body hair. It started as a social campaign asking ladies to skip a visit to the beautician. Since then, many of them have joined the campaign and believe that this decision has given them a freedom they have never experienced before.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA wrote about what the world's most hairy woman, who got into the Guinness Book of Records, looks like. She started shaving and even got married.
