How to clean tile grout: three simple steps

Yulia PoteriankoLife
Tile grout maintenance can be quite simple

Cleaning the bathroom would be much easier if it weren't for the grout. It easily collects dirt and dust, and under the influence of water and household chemicals, it changes color, wears off and loses its attractiveness. Even the more durable modern epoxy grout suffers from regular, thorough cleaning. The situation seems hopeless.

In fact, it's not all that bad. Experts from Good Housekeeping magazine have told us how to properly care for tile joints to keep them clean and looking good.

Step one

A paste made from two parts baking soda and one part water will clean the joints well. It is best to apply it with a toothbrush. You'll need much less effort if you use an electric toothbrush with an old brush head.

Step two

Pour the distilled white vinegar into a spray bottle and spray it onto the baking soda paste you have previously applied. The substances will react, and the resulting foam will deeply clean the pores in the seams.

Step three

Remove any remaining dirt with a stiff toothbrush and then rinse off with warm water.

It will take a little more effort to clean the seams with melamine sponges. This is a more expensive method, but it does not require additional chemicals, although the sponge itself will wear off quickly enough during operation, and its residue will need to be washed off with water. Experts advise cutting the sponge into pieces of a convenient size before cleaning.

As for the traces of limescale, the same distilled white vinegar in a spray is a good solution. The substance will need to be diluted with water in a 1:1 ratio, and then sprayed on the shower stall and tiles along with the seams and wiped off with a damp cloth. Such cleaning several times a week will protect your bathroom from the accumulation of limescale, which becomes very difficult to remove over time.
