Have they started to clean up their tracks? There is a new twist in the Surovikin "disappearance" scandal
A page with information about Russian General Sergey Surovikin, the former commander of the air and space forces of the aggressor country and the occupant group in Ukraine, has disappeared from the website of the Russian Defence Ministry. Also, his name was removed from the list of the leadership of the department.
According to the propaganda Telegram channel "VChK-OGPU", this can be considered the first official confirmation of Surovikin's resignation. The day before, the channel noted that Surovikin, according to the website of the occupant country's Defense Ministry, continued to be listed as commander of the Russian Armed Forces.
The Moscow Times, banned in Russia, citing sources, wrote that Surovikin's persecution is connected with his probable support for the head of PMC Wagner, Yevgeny Prigozhin.
"There the story with him was not ok. For the authorities. Apparently, he chose the side (Prigozhin during the rebellion. - Ed.), and he was grabbed by the b*ls," - said the interlocutor of the publication.
Recall, Surovikin from October 2022 to January 2023 led the group of occupiers in Ukraine, then was deputy commander of the group. After the rebellion "Wagner" he disappeared from the public field. Later there was information about his arrest on suspicion of state treason. According to The New York Times' sources, Surovikin knew about Prigozhin's plans to revolt.
Surovikin was subsequently fired from his post as commander of the Russian Air Force allegedly due to a transfer to another job. This post was taken over by General Viktor Afzalov. However, on the website of the Russian Defense Ministry, the reshuffle was not reflected.
The aggressor country's Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu ignored a question about an investigation into Surovikin, while Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said "No, you can't" when asked by an AFP reporter if it was possible to ask about the investigation.
As reported by OBOZREVATEL:
- On September 4, Russian journalist Ksenia Sobchak published a photo of Surovikin with his wife and wrote that he was "alive, healthy, at home, with his family, in Moscow."
- According to The New York Times' sources in Russia and the United States, Surovikin was released from custody a few days after Prigozhin's death.
- Kremlin propagandists are already discussing how Surovikin will die. According to one of their versions, the general may die of a heart attack.
