A dangerous narrative: Kuleba explains why the upcoming counter-offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces should not be called "decisive"

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that the counter-offensive planned by the Ukrainian Defence Forces to liberate the territories seized by Russia should not be considered decisive. Such a narrative could affect the further position of the allied states regarding military assistance to Ukraine.

A Ukrainian official said this in an interview with the Financial Times on Thursday, March 30. According to him, statements about a "decisive offensive" could be dangerous for Kyiv.

The newspaper noted that some in the West view the Ukrainian Armed Forces' counter-offensive, which could take place in the spring, as a decisive moment for Ukraine. At the same time, if something goes wrong, this will allow these forces to put pressure on Kyiv and push for compromises with the aggressor state of Russia.

"We must counteract the perception of a counter-offensive as a decisive battle in the war. All wars are a series of battles. If this offensive is perceived as decisive, but does not lead to the complete liberation of Ukraine, then some may say that this was the last decisive battle, and now we need to think about an alternative scenario," the minister said.

At the same time, Kuleba stressed that a minority of Western countries may insist on reducing aid to Ukraine, they may come up with something like the Minsk 3. But the majority is ready to support us to the end.

The day before, Ukraine's Defence Minister Oleksii Reznikov said that the Ukrainian army could launch a counter-offensive in April-May 2023. According to him, the counterattack is planned in several directions.

Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said that the Russian occupation forces have already depleted their supplies for the war that Russia has unleashed in Ukraine. He said that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have a "very good chance" of a successful counter-offensive in the spring of 2023.

According to the US Secretary of Defence, compared to Russian forces, it is Ukraine that currently has a "significant advantage".
