5 Murals of the World You Can't Take Your Eyes Off of

At one time, street art was a tool to protest against the system, the authorities, the accepted rules. Over time, it has become an independent art form. Street art is appreciated all over the world, for its representatives hold festivals, which result in dozens of murals. OBOZREVATEL collected the most interesting of them.

1. Kiss (New York, USA).

The Brazilian artist Eduardo Cobra began his art at the age of 12. At that time he often had to run away from the police in São Paulo and paint at night, so no one would see him. As an adult he was already recognized as one of the most popular masters of street art in the country. His paintings decorate the walls of not only his homeland. In the famous park in New York - the High Line - there is another expressive image of the author. Its title, The Kiss, speaks for itself. Eduardo's trademark is the combination of black and white and color motifs in one canvas and the retranslation of old images through the lens of a new vision.

2. The Brotherly Kiss (Berlin, Germany)

In 2005, Berlin received the City of Design award from UNESCO. This gave it the right to be called the street art capital of the world. By that time, almost all the buildings and fences in the city were painted with hundreds of pictures, pictures of which are still walking around the Internet.

It's hard to choose just one mural. They are all worthy of attention, because they differ from each other by theme, style and design. There are huge images of nature, pop art drawings, portraits and even caricatures of political figures. Wall paintings have become a powerful tool of self-expression of German youth.

Foreigners especially like the mural "Lord! Help me to survive in the midst of this deadly love" or "The Brotherly Kiss" by Dmitri Vrubel. It depicts Leonid Brezhnev, General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee, and Erich Honneker, head of the GDR.

3. Whale (Zagber, Croatia)

In 2015, a large-scale street art festival was held in the Croatian capital. Among the invited artists was the Frenchman Etienne. His paintings always go beyond reality and create a kind of parallel reality. So this time the artist painted a large whale on a high-rise in a landlocked city.

The peculiarity of this wall painting is its location. It is on the corner of the house, which creates a kind of 3D effect. Curiously, it is possible to see the entire composition only from one side. Therefore, viewers have to go around the entire structure to enjoy the full view of the mural.

4. The Magic Book (Malmö, Sweden)

The largest Scandinavian street art festival in 2014 brought many talented artists from all over the world to Malmö. Among them was the Polish artist Natalia Rak. Her work stands out for its fairy-tale motifs and combination of different styles. Thus, the mural "Magic Book" appeared on one of the houses in the city, which shows a girl reading. In the hands of the heroine stories made of paper come to life and become real. So the artist wanted to show that children's world is boundless and very interesting.

5. The Owl (Bielsko-Biala, Poland).

A surrealistic image of an owl with human eyes is practically a trademark of the Polish city of Bielsko-Biala. The picture on the apartment building was painted by a local artist working under the pseudonym Turbos. The backdrop for the bird on the mural is a mythical forest, shimmering in the bright glow of the moon.
