When is Easter in 2023: date and whether there will be a day off
The most important church holiday of spring is Easter. On this day, believers commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and his ascension to heaven.
There is no specific date for Easter; every year the holiday depends on the lunar calendar, with only the day of the week - Sunday - remaining unchanged. Read OBOZREVATEL's article to find out when Orthodox and Catholics will celebrate Easter in 2023 and whether Ukrainians will have an extra day off.
What day does Easter fall on in 2023?
The date of Easter is calculated depending on the first full moon after the vernal equinox. The nearest Sunday to this date will be Easter. If the date coincides with the Jewish holiday of Passover, Easter is moved forward one week.
In 2023, Orthodox Easter will be celebrated on April 16. Catholics will celebrate it on April 9.
Why do Catholics and Orthodox have different Easter dates?
It's very simple and, of course, has to do with calendars. Orthodox Christians use the Julian calendar, while Catholics use the Gregorian calendar.
Orthodox Easter is celebrated no earlier than April 4.
Sometimes the dates of the Orthodox and Catholic holidays coincide, but more often they differ by 1-2 weeks. In 2025, Orthodox and Catholics will celebrate Easter on the same day, April 20.
Easter weekend 2023
Since Easter falls on a Sunday, the Easter holiday will be a day off. However, due to martial law, the traditional day off on Monday, April 17, will be cancelled.
The employer may, at its discretion, grant employees a day off.
Earlier, OBOZREVATEL talked about the traditions of Easter among Orthodox Christians and named the dates of the holiday until 2030.
