Russian media fall for fake news about Olena Zelenska "spending more than a million dollars on Cartier jewelry"

Russian propagandists have come up with an absurd fake about Ukraine's First Lady Olena Zelenska. Allegedly, the wife of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made expensive purchases in a New York jewelry store during a visit to the United States in September 2023. As "evidence", the Russian media cited an "image of a receipt" from a branded store in her name.

This was reported by StopFake.org. The photo shows the date of September 22, 2023 and the amount of more than a million dollars.

According to the propagandists, while the President of Ukraine was addressing the UN General Assembly with an appeal for assistance and weapons supplies, "his wife went shopping in New York boutiques."

The story allegedly tells how on September 22, Olena Zelenska was spotted in a Cartier jewelry store on New York's Fifth Avenue. There, the first lady, accompanied by several bodyguards, "bought three pieces of jewelry: a bracelet, earrings, and a pendant." The amount was $1,110,000, as evidenced by a copy of the receipt cited by the Russian media. The details were allegedly reported by a local employee who had a conflict with Olena Zelenska. After a dispute with the guest, the employee was fired.

In their materials, Russian outlets refer to the publication of the Nigerian newspaper The Nation, which was the first to publish information about Zelenska's "purchases" in the United States. However, the receipt from the Cartier in New York turned out to be a fake, as the evidence showed that the president's wife could not have been there at the time in question.

The receipt was posted on the social network by a user under the name @gorgeous.bb.jeanette, whose profile is currently closed and does not contain any information. The date of purchase on the receipt is September 22, 2023, but the Zelenskyy couple was no longer in New York that day.

The day before, the First Lady and the President of Ukraine attended official events in Washington, D.C., as evidenced by numerous photographs.

At that time, Olena Zelenska was at the White House, where she met with US First Lady Jill Biden. She also attended public events at Georgetown University.

On September 22, the Ukrainian delegation took a direct flight from the American capital to neighboring Canada. The Zelenskys were also on board.
