Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in the top. 7 biggest scandals in the Windsor royal family in 2023
In November, Charles III, King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, celebrated his 75th birthday. On this occasion, he hosted a pompous banquet at his London residence, to which he invited all his closest relatives. To clarify, everyone except Prince Harry (his own son) and his wife Meghan Markle. Of course, the Dukes of Sussex did not react to this publicly. However, their dissatisfaction went beyond "kitchen talk."
As you may have realized, the Windsor royal family does not always manage to keep quarrels quiet. And 2023 is no exception. Read more in the OBOZ.UA article.
1. Memoirs "Spare"
In January 2023, Prince Harry, together with journalist John Meringer, released his memoirs "Spare". This is Harry's autobiography: from his carefree childhood and the loss of his mother (Princess Diana) to the difficult decision to abandon royal regalia and responsibilities.
The book with its telling title has strained the relationship between its author and the Windsors (it is not known whether they will be able to find a common ground afterwards). The key point is that the prince frankly wrote that he has always been a "spare" (second in command to his brother Prince William). In addition, he called the current Queen Consort Camilla a thief and added several stories about conflicts between his wife Meghan Markle and Duchess Kate Middleton.
2. The trial between Meghan Markle and her sister
In February 2023, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry found themselves in a courtroom. Entertainment Tonight writes about it. The reason is that Samantha Markle filed a lawsuit against the Duchess (half-sister) because she, having become a member of the royal family, "disowned her father and relatives in his line." The plaintiff added that in a scandalous interview with Oprah Winfrey (2021) and in the book Finding Freedom (2020), Meghan humiliated her: "It was a lie aimed at destroying (Samantha's - Ed.) reputation, which exposed her to humiliation, shame and hatred on a global scale."
How did this story end? The relative demanded damages in the amount of $75,000 (approximately UAH 3 million), but she was unsuccessful.
3. Eviction from Frogmore House
Queen Elizabeth II presented Frogmore House to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle for the wedding. This is a country residence of the British royal family, located 1 km from Windsor Castle. It has a luxurious park and garden pavilions nearby. Who wouldn't dream of such a place?
Several years passed. The Sussexes suddenly abandoned their royal duties. Her Majesty allowed the couple to remain the owners of the cottage. When Elizabeth II passed away, Charles III decided not to fulfill his late mother's will and evicted the couple from the residence in March 2023. This was his way of punishing Meghan and Harry for speaking openly in interviews about the misunderstandings in the Windsor family.
4. Inappropriate outfit
In November 2023, Kate Middleton got into a loud scandal because she wore a luxury outfit and had an inappropriate image. The New York Post writes about it. Thus, the king's daughter-in-law recorded a video in which she appealed to the nation for donations for children. In it, she appeared in a silk blouse from the Lisou Betty brand, which costs $400 (about 15 thousand UAH). After the video was released, many people found Catherine's appearance in expensive clothes unacceptable, and the network was flooded with negative comments:
- "Children in Need is the day when rich, famous people ask poor people to give money to poor people."
- "Just change your clothes and help the children!"
- "I know families of disabled children who went without food so that their child could eat. So it's strange for me to see Kate Middleton on the BBC wearing a $400 blouse."
We should add that it wasn't all bad, as some fans noted that the princess had already worn this shirt in 2020.
5. The "unwanted" guest
In May 2023, the coronation of Charles III took place in London. It brought together respected world leaders, the royal family and citizens of the United Kingdom to witness the historic event. Then it became known that Meghan Markle had declined the invitation. Her husband Prince Harry arrived alone. The most scandalous moment was when the youngest son of the king stood apart from his brother and father. His visit was short-lived and formal: after the official part, Harry went to the airport and flew to the United States to visit his wife and children.
6. A broken connection
In August 2023, it became known that Buckingham Palace had not informed Prince Harry for a long time about the deteriorating health of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II (who died on September 8, 2022). This is stated in the book Endgame (2023) by the Dukes of Sussex biographer Omid Scobie.
When Her Majesty was dying, Harry was still told the sad news. He flew to Scotland to say goodbye to her, but did not have time. Now the prince blames his older brother Prince William for this.
7. A racist scandal
In August 2023, Omid Scobie's book Endgame, mentioned above, was published. In it, the author wrote about an incident in 2021: when Meghan Markle said that some at the royal court were worried about the skin color of her unborn son Archie. Scobie did not name who the Duchess was referring to. However, later, in the Dutch translation of the book (Eindstrijd), it was reported that Kate Middleton was involved in the racist scandal.
While the tabloids were discussing how Prince William's wife's name could have ended up in the book, she and her husband attended the Royal Variety event. The couple did not comment on the quote from the book, but it affected Kate's emotional state: she was not as respectful and proud as usual.
Soon Omid Scobie assured us that there is no version of his book that contains this or that name in this context. He also added that he doesn't speak Dutch, so he couldn't check the translation and inaccuracies himself. What was the reaction of the publishing house Xander Uitgevers, which distorted the information? They temporarily withdrew the book from sale and said that on December 8, readers will be able to buy a corrected version of Eindstrijd.
