Mstyslav Chernov will be able to vote for the best films at the Oscars: director of 20 Days in Mariupol has received an invitation

Mstyslav Chernov received an invitation to join the American Film Academy

Ukrainian film director of 20 Days in Mariupol and photojournalist Mstyslav Chernov will be able to vote for the best films for the Oscars in the coming years if he accepts the invitation of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to become a member of the organization. In total, 487 people who distinguished themselves with their films in 2024 received applications.

The entire list of invitees was published on the website of the American Film Academy. So far, Mstyslav Chernov has not confirmed his participation.

As far as we know, this year's jury includes 71 Oscar nominees and 19 winners. Mstyslav Chernov is among them.

According to The Guardian, if all possible participants agree, the number of Academy members will increase to 10,910. Of these, 9,934 will be able to vote next year at the 97th Academy Awards.

"We are thrilled to welcome this year's group of new Academy members. These extraordinarily talented artists and professionals from around the world have made a significant impact on our film community," said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Young.

It is known that the film director Sergei Loznitsa, who has Ukrainian citizenship but fervently defends Russian culture, was also invited to join the critics. In 2022, he was expelled from the Ukrainian Film Academy because of his ambiguous position on Russia's military invasion of Ukraine. However, at this year's Cannes Film Festival, he presented his work Invasion with a brooch in the form of a Ukrainian flag.

Earlier, OBOZ.UA wrote how Sergei Loznitsa defended Russian culture from boycotts and harassment at the Cannes Film Festival.
