How the Victoria's Secret "angel" Adriana Lima changed, who eradicated the fashion for unhealthy thinness, but went down at the height of fame
Brazilian supermodel Adriana Lima is an innovator in her niche who turned the masses' perception of the beauty of the female body around almost 30 years ago. Becoming a Victoria's Secret "angel" and signing contracts with the world's top fashion houses, the star with seductive forms put an end to the fashion for unhealthy thinness and proved that all women are beautiful.
Of course, in the distant 00s, this thesis was just beginning to gain popularity, but Lima is considered the founder of the popularization of curves in modeling. Now 43 years old, she is raising three children, has less time to devote to her career, and has to deal with hate because of her external changes. OBOZ.UA decided to tell you about the supermodel, who was once one of the highest-paid fashion models in the world.
The start of her career
The Brazilian beauty never dreamed of a modeling career until she was 13. At the time, the niche was full of skinny celebrities who posed on the catwalks and in the frame. But one day Adriana's friend asked her to take part in a beauty contest, where the schoolgirl unexpectedly won.
Two years later, she took second place in the Supermodel of the World contest. This was the beginning of Lima's successful career. Already in the 90s, she was swept up in a whirlwind of advertising contracts, fashion shows, photo shoots, and New York social life.
Giorgio Armani, Vera Wang, Valentino, Versace, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, Christian Dior, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Prada, and other world-famous brands wanted to work with the dark-haired beauty.
Once a photo of the young model was hung in Times Square, which was another significant step towards popularizing seductive figure proportions. Even the lingerie brand Victoria's Secret broke its own tradition of thinness and signed a contract with Lima.
The heyday of her career and problems with men
For 19 years, the "angel" built a successful career, during which Lima managed to star in popular projects such as Ocean's 8, How I Met Your Mother, and others, give birth to children, and become the face of GQ, ELLE, Esquire, Vogue, Marie Claire, and more.
In 2021, Business Insider named her the third highest paid model in the world. However, this is not the best position for a star. In 2011, she was ranked fourth among her colleagues in the Forbes ranking, and thanks to a contract with Maybelline, she rose to second place, behind only Gisele Bündchen.
Despite such a successful career, Adriana did not find happiness in her personal life. She had affairs with famous athletes, writers, businessmen, and showbiz stars, but the beauties cheated on her, did not appreciate her, and did not agree to move to the United States.
Since 2021, Lima has been dating producer Andre Lemmers, whom she has no plans to marry, but the couple often appears on the red carpet.
Children and scandals
Recent years have not been the most successful in the model's life. In 2018, she terminated her contract with Victoria's Secret, gave birth to her third child, and gained weight. For this, as well as for the obvious external changes in her face, the model is often hated.
She once lost it and told critics that she did not recognize herself in the photo. However, despite this, the star accepts her age and does not want to change because of the opinions of strangers.
"The face of a tired mother of a teenage girl, one active boy and a one-year-old who is learning to walk, and three dogs. I was not offended or anything, I laughed. The thing is, I'm not 16 years old. I started modeling at 16, but I will never be 16 again. I'm 42, and I'm happier than ever," Adriana assured Harpers Bazaar.
Now the star has disappeared from the media and fans' view. Her page, which is subscribed to by more than 17 million people, is almost never filled with new photos, and Lima stopped attending social events back in 2023.
