7 actors who shamelessly lied to get roles in iconic shows and movies

Darya SkubEntertainment
Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne lied to the filmmakers about being skilled riders.

Actors are not always honest with producers and directors during auditions. They, like other people at interviews, tend to exaggerate when talking about their skills or facts from their lives. All in order to stand out from the competition and add a solid project to their portfolio.

How far did celebrities go in their lies to get the role they wanted? Find out in the OBOZ.UA article.

1. Anne Hathaway

American actress and singer Anne Hathaway, while auditioning for the role of Lureen Newsome in the film Brokeback Mountain (2005), told director Ang Lee that she was able to ride horses, "Oh, yes, I am a really good rider!" She went on to take several lessons to gain real-world experience. But it wasn't enough. During filming, the horse ignored the movie star's verbal commands and threw her to the ground. It made the whole team laugh... The director, seeing Anne's confused look, waved his hand and told her to learn and return to filming.

Thus, the role of Lureen became a breakthrough in Hathaway's career! Before that, she had only played princesses in family films. And after the high-profile premiere, the celebrity was invited to play Andy Sachs in The Devil Wears Prada (2006).

2. Eddie Redmayne

British actor and model Eddie Redmayne is another daredevil who lied to directors about his ability to ride a horse. It happened during an audition for the role of Southampton in the miniseries Elizabeth I (2005). He later regretted this decision...

"I accelerated sharply at a speed of 100 miles per hour (approximately 161 km/h - Ed.)... I almost killed myself and half the crew," Eddie said on Late Night with Conan O'Brien. After the incident, the series' director, Tom Hooper, shouted into the loudspeaker, "You are a liar, Redmayne". He then sent the actor to horseback riding lessons.

3. Mila Kunis

In 1998, the American actress Mila Kunis was lucky enough to be selected for the role of Jackie Burkhart in the sitcom That 70s Show. This was despite the fact that the candidates had to be over 18 years old! Mila was 14 at the time. How did she manage to outwit the directors? "I told them I was a little older (than my real age - Ed.). I said I would be 18. Technically, it's not a lie because at some point... I will be 18," the actress admitted in an interview with Jay Leno. Although the directors quickly found out the truth, they still approved Mila for the role.

4. Liam Hemsworth

Australian actor Liam Hemsworth told the filmmakers during the audition for The Last Song (2010) that he was a good volleyball player. They believed him when they saw his athletic physique and cast him in the role of Will Blakelee.

On the set, the actor had to play against professional volleyball players. Against their background, his movements looked awkward... At one point, Hemsworth blushed, realizing his failure, but then he did some interesting moves that looked spectacular on camera.

5. Jason Momoa

American actor Jason Momoa is another star who likes to exaggerate when talking about himself. He came to the audition for the role of Jason Ioane in the cult TV series Baywatch (1989-1999) completely unprepared. He didn't even bring his resume!

When the directors asked if he was a model, he decided to improvise, "I am a popular model. I've worked with Gucci and Louis Vuitton...". Later, the actor's managers decided to add to this lie that he was Hawaii's Model of the Year. So that no one would doubt these words, they took several professional photos of Jason posing confidently.

6. Robert Pattinson

Robert Pattinson is now a world-famous actor. At the beginning of his career, he resorted to tricks to make his way in Hollywood. Thus, during the casting for the role of Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, the young man said that he had studied acting at Oxford University and the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (one of the best drama schools in England). He also claimed to be an American. Obviously, the directors did not have time to check the veracity of this information. Without hesitation, they cast him in the role.

7. Chloë Moretz

The American actress Chloë Moretz was honored to play the main role, Isabelle, in the film Hugo (2011). During the audition, she claimed to be British, just like the character, and imitated the accent. In fact, she was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.

In 2022, the celebrity did admit in an interview with WIRED that she had told director Martin Scorsese a lie, "I thanked him for hiring me. When I was about to walk out the door, he (Martin Scorsese - Ed.) said something like, 'Wait, did I hear an American accent? I said, 'Maybe' and he said, 'You fooled me'. Anyway, it worked, because I got the part. Sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to get approved."
