EU allowed Ukraine to import more electricity: new amount announced

The European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) has allowed Ukraine to import more electricity. Thus, the supply capacity has been increased by 150 MW - from the current 700 to 850 MW at any time of the day. Ukraine's export limit (currently not in place) remained at 400 MW.

European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson reported on it. She emphasized that the decision was made after a personal meeting with the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko.

"We reconfirmed our unwavering support to Ukraine and also we discussed concrete ways to continue showing our solidarity in the coming months. Just this morning, ENTSO-E has decided to further increase the import capacity from Ukraine to 850 MW from the current 700 MW. This is just one step, but clearly, this is progress," Simson said.

Ukrenergo has already commented on ENTSO-E's decision. The company emphasized that these figures for the capacity of interconnectors are not final.

"Shortly, the capacity will be revised for both imports and exports. It should be noted that the maximum capacity for electricity exports to Europe remains at 400 MW. Since October 11, 2022, Ukraine has not been exporting electricity to the EU countries," the company emphasized.

CEO of Ukrenergo Volodymyr Kudrytskyi noted that the ability to import electricity from Europe is an important factor in Ukraine's energy security. Thus, in the winter after the Russian terrorist attacks, imports from the EU allowed to keep the Ukrainian power system balanced and reduced the number and duration of blackouts.

Earlier, Kudrytskyy noted that although electricity from Europe is more expensive than Ukrainian electricity, industrial consumers are willing to pay more. This is done for the sake of being able to produce, sell or export their products.

In addition, according to Simson, the EU plans to supply solar panels to Ukraine. They will be needed to supply power to hospitals and other civilian infrastructure, even if Russia temporarily manages to disrupt some connections to the grid.

As OBOZREVATEL reported, Ukraine is being prepared to resume electricity exports to Europe. In particular, the Energy Committee of the Verkhovna Rada said the country needs the revenues from its sale, and therefore, the export ban should be lifted.
