The United States, in cooperation with its allies and partners, plans to strengthen deterrence of Russia in the Black Sea region in the future. To this end, joint activities and information exchange will be conducted.

The preparation of a Black Sea so-called strike against the aggressor country, which will also affect China, is envisaged by the US national defence strategy. This was stated by Mara Karlin, Assistant Secretary of the Pentagon for Strategy, Plans and Capabilities, in a video address to the Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum in Bucharest.

"We continue to encourage deeper engagement among Black Sea allies and partners to deter, as well as defend against, Russia's ongoing aggression in Ukraine and the wider Black Sea region," she said.

The diplomat noted that such interaction involves expanding the exchange of available information on possible threats from the Russian Federation between partners. This is necessary to summarise the assessment of the situation in the maritime sphere and beyond, as envisaged by the US National Defence Strategy.

"Building up deterrence and then maintaining it will allow the United States to cope with China - a constant challenge for our country - and Russia, which is defined in the strategy as an "acute threat," Karlin explained.

She also said that NATO is now making sure that the terrorist state of Russia does not have plans or even thoughts of attacking any member state.

To this end, the Allies have already doubled (to eight) the number of NATO battlegroups on the eastern flank. Today, there are more than 100,000 US troops in Europe. This unity, the US Defence Department representative stressed, is a key component in deterring Russian aggression.

According to her, the United States and its NATO partners will also continue to cooperate in the Black Sea region on military modernisation to counter the military threat from Russia. In particular, by strengthening positions and conducting military exercises.

Mara Karlin says that the security of the Black Sea region will require a joint approach to strengthening defence capabilities, identifying and preventing threats, enhancing readiness and resilience, including against Russian cyberattacks.
