Scholz calls support for Ukraine a matter of Germany's historical responsibility
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that for his country, support for Ukraine is a matter of historical responsibility. There can be only one place for Germany - on the side of Ukraine, he emphasized.
Scholz said this in a speech on July 20 on the occasion of the anniversary of the failed assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, Der Spiegel reports. The politician also mentioned Ukraine, which is resisting Russian aggression.
"Because of our responsibility to our own history, there is only one place for Germany in this situation - on the side of Ukraine. In 2024, we cannot celebrate this July 20 without remembering the courageous citizens of Ukraine who have been resisting Russia's criminal war of aggression for more than two years," he said.
Scholz also mentioned Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. He noted that there is an ongoing war, "with which the Russian rulers openly pursue the goal of conquering Ukraine and destroying it as a sovereign country." And all this is happening "79 years after the end of World War II and 79 years after the entry into force of the United Nations Charter."
The Chancellor called on German citizens to be vigilant in protecting democracy. It depends on the participation of citizens, their respect for each other and opposition to all forms of hatred and extremism.
"Those who fight against our democracy will always meet our resolute resistance," Scholz emphasized.
As reported by OBOZ.UA, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz commented on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's call for Western allies to shoot down Russian missiles and drones over Ukrainian territory. He rejected this proposal, emphasizing that such steps are not being considered.
